Passing the PMP exam starts a 3-year certification cycle that requires 60 Professional Development Units (PDUs) to maintain. For many PMP holders, this feels like a burden — another recurring obligation on top of already demanding project management careers. But the reality is more manageable than it sounds, particularly if you know which free methods to prioritise.
From my own experience maintaining my PMP certification, the methods I rely on most are PMI chapter events and webinars — and I find genuine value in them beyond the PDU credits. Staying connected with peers through these events keeps my project management knowledge current and puts me in contact with people whose experience and insights are directly useful to my work.
Understanding the PDU Requirement
The 60 PDUs required over 3 years break down across two categories:

The critical insight: you need at least 35 Education PDUs. You can get up to 25 from simply doing your job as a project manager. This means that for an actively working PM, 25 of your 60 PDUs require no action at all — they come from your professional practice.
Free Method 1: PMI Chapter Events (Best Method)
Joining your local PMI chapter is the single most valuable PDU-earning activity available, and most chapter events are either free for members or very low cost. Chapters run:
- Monthly chapter meetings — typically 1-2 PDUs per event, often free for chapter members
- Annual symposiums and conferences — 4-8 PDUs per event
- Volunteer opportunities — volunteering in chapter operations earns Giving Back PDUs
- Study groups — particularly valuable for newer PMP holders
PMI chapter membership costs approximately $30-65 USD per year depending on the chapter — on top of your PMI global membership. This is not free, but the PDU earning potential from chapter events typically far exceeds the membership cost, making it extremely cost-effective.
Chapter events and webinars are the methods I use most for earning PDUs. Beyond the credential value, they keep you connected with peers who are navigating the same challenges you are. The professional relationships you build at chapter events are often as valuable as the PDUs themselves.
Free Method 2: PMI Online Webinars
PMI runs a continuous programme of free webinars for members through its PMI.org platform. These cover project management, Agile, leadership, and increasingly AI in project management — all directly relevant to a working PM’s practice.
Each webinar typically earns 1 PDU. PMI tracks your attendance automatically when you register and attend through the PMI platform — the PDU is added to your CCRS (Continuing Certification Requirements System) record within a few weeks.
Realistic accumulation rate: attending 2-3 PMI webinars per month earns 24-36 Education PDUs per year — more than enough for your annual Education requirement without any additional paid courses.
Free Method 3: Writing Articles and Publishing on LinkedIn
This is a Giving Back PDU method that many PMP holders overlook — and it is one of the most practical for professionals who enjoy writing about their field.
When you write a PM-related article and publish it, you can claim PDUs under the Creating Content category of Giving Back. The process requires registering the activity with PMI through your CCRS profile — you log the activity, describe what you created, and claim the appropriate PDUs.
Friends and colleagues of mine have actively used this method, posting articles on LinkedIn about project management topics and registering them with PMI for PDU credit. One well-researched article of 800-1,000 words can claim approximately 1 PDU. If you are already active on LinkedIn professionally, this is PDU earning with zero additional time investment.
Important: PMI does not automatically track your LinkedIn articles. You must manually log each creative activity in your CCRS profile. Go to myPMI → CCRS → Report PDUs → Creating Content. Fill in the title, date, and a brief description. PMI may periodically audit claims, so keep your published article available for verification.
Free Method 4: Self-Directed Learning
PMI allows you to claim PDUs for structured self-directed learning — reading PM books, studying new methodologies, or researching industry developments — under the Education category.
The rule: for every hour of structured self-directed learning, you can claim 1 PDU. You can claim up to 8 PDUs per 3-year cycle from self-directed reading.
Practical application: reading the Agile Practice Guide cover-to-cover counts. Reading a PM leadership book counts. Researching AI tools for project management counts — as long as it is genuinely structured learning rather than casual browsing.
Free Method 5: Working as a Project Manager
The simplest free PDU method: your professional practice itself. PMI allows you to claim up to 8 PDUs per year (maximum 25 per 3-year cycle) for Working as a Practitioner — simply doing your job as a project manager.
Log this annually in CCRS. For a full-time project manager, this is 8 PDUs per year with zero additional effort — just an accurate record of your professional activity.

One method that is not free but worth knowing: PMI-approved online courses (Coursera, LinkedIn Learning, Udemy) earn Education PDUs but at a cost. These are your fallback if you fall behind on free methods in year 3. A single Udemy course at $15-20 on sale can yield 8-12 PDUs. Use this as a top-up, not your primary strategy.
