About the Author

When I applied for the PMP in 2022, ChatGPT did not exist. I went through the application manually — gathering project details from memory, writing experience descriptions from scratch, and relying on my mentor. The process took significantly more time than it needed to.

If I were applying today I would use ChatGPT specifically for the experience description section — the most time-consuming and consequential part of the PMI portal. I have used ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and Claude extensively over the past year in my project and product work at Artpic.in.

Where ChatGPT Adds the Most Value

Application SectionAI UsefulnessWhy
Educational detailsLowJust entering facts — no writing required
Contact hoursLowFactual entry from training certificate
Experience descriptionsVery HighMost time-consuming and most impactful
Project role descriptionsHighFraming your role in PMI language
Audit documentationMediumAI can draft cover letters if audited

The experience description section is where most candidates struggle and where ChatGPT provides the most genuine value. Writing clear PM-focused descriptions of projects you managed years ago in PMI specific language is exactly the structured writing task AI handles well.

Step 1: Gather Your Raw Project Information First

Before opening ChatGPT, prepare your raw material for each project:

  • Project name and organisation
  • Your role and title at the time
  • Approximate start and end dates
  • Team size and composition
  • What the project delivered in plain language
  • Your specific PM responsibilities: scope, schedule, risk, stakeholders
  • The outcome: delivered on time, key metrics, client acceptance

Step 2: The Experience Description Prompt

PROMPT — PMP Experience Description Generator You are helping write a project experience description for a PMP certification application to PMI.   The description must: – Demonstrate that I was LEADING and DIRECTING the project – Use PM language: scope, schedule, risk, stakeholders, quality, change control – Be 100-150 words, first person, past tense – End with a measurable outcome   Project: [PROJECT NAME] Organisation: [COMPANY NAME] Role: [YOUR TITLE] Duration: [START DATE] to [END DATE] Team: [SIZE AND COMPOSITION] What was built: [PLAIN ENGLISH DESCRIPTION] PM responsibilities: [LIST WHAT YOU DID] Outcome: [RESULT]   Write a PMI-compliant project experience description.

Run this prompt for each project separately. The more specific your inputs, the more accurate and usable the output. Vague inputs produce generic outputs that PMI reviewers will recognise as thin.

Step 3: Before and After Example

Raw input provided to ChatGPT:

Project: eCommerce Platform. Organisation: Valethi Technologies. Role: Project Manager. Team: 8 developers, 2 QA, 1 BA across India and UK. PM responsibilities: scope, schedule, stakeholder reviews, Agile sprints. Outcome: 2 major releases, 98% on time.

AI-generated output:

Led end-to-end project management for a multi-vendor eCommerce platform serving retail clients across India and the United Kingdom. Defined and maintained project scope, managed a cross-functional team of 11 members across development, QA, and business analysis. Facilitated Agile sprint cycles, conducted weekly stakeholder reviews, and implemented formal change control. Identified and resolved cross-timezone dependency conflicts between India and UK teams. Managed risk register and escalated critical items with proposed mitigations. Delivered two major platform releases with a 98% on-time rate.

Step 4: Verify Every Fact Before Submitting

Every date, team size, project name, and outcome must be accurate and verifiable. PMI audits a percentage of applications. AI produces fluent professional language — but it works with the details you provide. Verify every factual claim before the description enters the portal.

Never submit an AI-generated PMP application description without personally verifying every factual claim. AI cannot know whether your team was 8 or 11 people or whether the project ran 14 or 16 months. You know these things. Verify them.

Other Ways to Use ChatGPT During PMP Application

  • Calculating experience months across concurrent overlapping projects
  • Drafting audit response cover letters if selected for PMI audit
  • Translating technical leadership roles into PMI project management language
  • Reviewing your full application for consistency across all descriptions

ChatGPT was not available when I applied in 2022. If it had been I would have used it precisely as described above. The manual process with my mentor worked — but it was slower and more stressful than it needed to be. Use the tools available to you.
