An enchantingly beautiful magician named He Si Mu (Dilraba Dilmurat) is the sovereign of the spirit world. The 400 year old Spirit Lord walks the earth to guide mortals to the spirit world at night and guides the spirits back to their realm during the day. She meets a dashing young general named Duan Xu (Arthur Chen) on one of her many earthly wanderings and is intrigued. But more than through him, it is the sword of salvation he carries that draws his interest.

She plans her moves, gets close to him. But it’s more difficult than she expected, as Duan Xu has several tricks up his sleeve. What starts as a playful push and pull escalates into something deeper and more meaningful. “Love beyond the grave” is not just a supernatural fantasy drama, but one with a strong emotional core.

We are introduced to He Si Mu, the enchanting wandering Spirit Lord. She was anointed as the current Sovereign, given her skills as a spirit honed over years of cultivation.

Dressed in her bright clothes, she confesses that her world is colorless, and she also lacks the five senses, although seeing her confidence, you’d think otherwise. She likes to roam around the mortal world, especially Liangzhou. There is a prophecy that the master of the Sword of Liberation is a magic bearer that will help restore her senses. It has been more than three hundred years, and she has yet to meet this man.

On one of her many excursions, while walking through the war-torn inner city, an injured man asks her to save his son. On her way to the pile of bodies, she saw the commander of the Tabai army, the young general Duan Xu, walk in.

Si Mu, wearing an eternally nonchalant expression, is taken back for once. She saw the Sword of Liberation strapped to Duan Xu’s waist, the very sword that had belonged to her uncle centuries ago. Curious about Duan Xu and equally about him being his master, she transforms into her mortal body and assumes the identity of He Xiao Xiao.

She faints and asks Duan Xu to help save her brother, the injured man’s son, Chen Ying. Duan Xu asks his men to escort her and Chen Ying to their estate.

Duan Xu’s people are suspicious of her and consider both her and Chen Ying to be spies. On the other hand, Si Mu is equally wary of Duan Xu, convinced that he is not what he claims to be. But during an assassination attack on him, she realizes that he is indeed the sword’s master and the chosen one.

She later learns from her assistant, who investigates Duan Xu for her, that he came from a learned family and had relatives in royalty, but that he was sued in court. But now that he is a general, Si Mu concludes that he will surely die sooner or later and that she will eventually gain access to the sword.

One day, while observing him incognito, she slips from her Spirit Lantern, trembling in the presence of the sword, which causes her to fall from her vantage point. Duan Xu sees her, and it is clear that he knows she is not who she intends to be.

Duan Xu, on the other hand, is impressed with her ability to predict the weather, a skill that proves useful in battle, and he asks her to stay by his side. He also asks his people to investigate her, and although they come back empty-handed, he notes with a smile that she is quite interesting.

When one of his commanders, who is investigating her, asks her to reveal the truth about why she continues to shadow him, she replies with a straight face that she loves him. Duan Xu heard and smiled, well aware that she was playing games.

In one scene, when Si Mu enters his room and observes his marked body, his curiosity deepens. Watching him closely, she is convinced that Duan Xu is not who he claims to be: there is nothing about him that feels rooted in the region he supposedly belongs to. Her suspicion is further confirmed when her assistant reports that Duan Xu was ambushed in battle at the age of 19, leading her to believe that he may not be the same person, but someone who has been replaced.

It’s amusing how she refers to him as “foxy” in her mind, admits that he is much more than he appears and admires his sharp reflexes.

Meanwhile, Duan Xu is well aware that she does not have the five senses and is able to see her even when she is invisible. The two constantly test each other, and while the outcomes are sometimes grim, they are often laced with humor.

Since she knows he is her game breaker and no longer wishes him dead, she wants to protect him. She offers him a deal: she will grant his wishes in exchange for helping her regain her senses. But Duan Xu refuses, saying he never makes wishes. Yes, Mu has to make another plan, but he seems to know very well what his designs are.

Who are these two individuals, caught in such a strange dance of fates?

Dilraba Dilmurat presents Si Mu as playful and elusive, with an almost childlike smile that suggests very little actually moves her. There’s an ease and confidence about her, a self-assuredness that makes the character feel both untouchable and quietly intriguing.

Arthur Chen, on the other hand, is the exuberant general anyway—composed, restrained, and calmly observant. He brings a calm intensity to Duan Xu, revealing more through silence than overt expression.

Together, the two share an understated yet compelling chemistry, one that simmers under their constant scrutiny and mistrust.

What also stands out is the sheer production value. The costumes, in particular, are stunning, rich in detail and texture, adding to the visual grandeur of the world.
