The Premier League has secured a fifth Champions League place for next season’s competition – although it could still rise to seven places.

A fifth place will now be enough for Champions League qualification after that Arsenal’s 1-0 win against Sporting in the quarter-finals, first leg sealed the extra spot.

This is the second consecutive year that the Premier League has gained an additional place, with the Premier League topping the European standings.

At the moment, Liverpool sit fifth in the Premier League, but Arne Slot’s side are only a point ahead of Chelsea in sixth place.

However, there could be further representatives for England in next year’s Champions League.

If Aston Villa, currently fourth, win the Europa League and finish outside the top four, England will have six teams in Europe’s top competition.

The same scenario applies to Liverpool in the Champions League.

If one of them wins a European trophy and finishes in fifth place, the sixth place will qualify for the Champions League. If both were to win a European trophy and finish in fifth and sixth place, the seventh place would qualify for the Champions League.

Nottingham Forest can also play Champions League football next season by winning the Europa League.

Who can get second additional CL spot?

UEFA is awarding an additional place to two leagues, so with the Premier League guaranteed one of them, the race for the other place is on.

Spain are on course to secure it ahead of Germany and Portugal.

UEFA coefficient table (April 7)

  • 1. England (F) – 25,013
  • 2. Spain – 20,281
  • 3. Germany – 19,714
  • 4. Portugal – 18,900
  • 5. Italy – 18,714

How does the coefficient table work?

Each nation is awarded points based on the performance of their clubs in the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League.

His total points are then divided by the number of clubs he has participating in European competition, with nations ranked by their average scores in the table.

Wins are worth two coefficient points, draws are worth one and defeats are worth nothing.

In addition, bonus points are awarded according to finishing positions in the league stage tables, and progress through each knockout round.

The bonus points are much higher in the Champions League compared to the other two competitions.

The team that finishes at the top of the Champions League stage table earns 12 bonus points, compared to six for the team that finishes at the top of the Europa League league stage table, and four for the team that finishes at the top of the Conference League league stage table.

How England could still have SEVEN Champions League teams…

There is a specific but very possible outcome whereby England could have seven teams in next season’s tournament – almost a fifth of the overall contingent in the league stage.

It would require Liverpool to win the Champions League this season while also finishing in the top five in the Premier League. Due to their qualification as holders, the free place given to their league position will in theory go to the team sixth.

As Aston Villa occupy that sixth position and win the Europa League – which Opta say they are favorites to do – they will also automatically qualify for the Champions League. Currently leaving the team in seventh Brentfordto sweep Europe’s premier competition and reach as one of a record-breaking seven representatives.
