The video quality is excellent, with a large 166-degree field of view that easily captures your front yard and any packages that may be sitting on the ground near the door. If you have other Nest displays, like the Nest Hubwill show them video alerts, and you can even turn on automatic picture-in-picture on your Google TV. When people talk to the doorbell, the quality is nice and crisp, and you can even talk to delivery drivers or friends who drop in when you’re away.

You don’t need a subscription to use the basic video recording and doorbell features on the Nest Doorbell, but an upgraded plan is available that adds a longer video history as well as more advanced tracking features. While it hasn’t been the most consistent for me, it tries to distinguish between familiar and unfamiliar faces, so it doesn’t bother pinging my phone when it sees me coming home. Depending on which plan you choose, you can get up to 60 days of video history, so I could look back weeks in the past to look for packages, or see if something happened to my neighbor’s car.
