Jake Tapper Just provided some context. CNNThere were reports of a proud statement issued by Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (NSC) following the ceasefire agreement with the United States. donald trump‘s claim that the network is pushing something fraudulent.
Trump on Tuesday blew up the network Truth Social falsely claimed the statement was a тАЬhoax.тАЭ His FCC Chairman Brendan CarrHe then falsely claimed in his post that the network was “publishing fraudulent headlines at this sensitive national security moment.”
The online article in question was a report on a National Security Council statement titled ‘Iran Claims Victory, Forces US to Accept 10-Point Plan’.
In the article, CNN reported that Iran’s Security Council statement read, “The enemy has suffered an undeniable, historic and crushing defeat through an unfair, illegal and criminal war against the Iranian nation.”
The broadcaster defended its report, saying it obtained the statement from Iranian officials and was also being reported in Iranian media. Senior international correspondent Matthew Chance said he obtained the document from Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other media outlets also reported it.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry issued another, much more cautious statement, avoiding more extreme propaganda.
“The crux of the matter is this: Iran’s Supreme National Security Council statement claiming an Iranian victory did not fit the message the Trump administration intended,” Tapper said on his show Wednesday. “And instead of condemning the Iranian regime’s contradictory statements or explaining how Iran does this all the time, President Trump attacked CNN and falsely claimed that we had lied and made it up. We didn’t make it up, and we didn’t present any of Iran’s stories as fact. We just presented them in the context of the rest of the war.” тАЬIt is our job as journalists to report on the content and what is happening in war.тАЭ
тАЬOur job is not to try to please the president or report only what he says he likes,тАЭ Tapper added. тАЬWe will say what is happening and we will continue to do so no matter how many lies this government or Iran tells.тАЭ
Carr’s post was followed. Previous threats he has made against broadcastersAfter Trump last month attacked media outlets for reporting on the war in Iran. тАЬThe law is clear: broadcasters must operate in the public interest or they will lose their licenses,тАЭ Carr wrote.
But in the case of CNN, Carr has no regulatory authority because the FCC has no oversight authority over cable content.
Representatives of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, a First Amendment group, condemned Carr’s attack on CNN. Ari Cohn, Senior Advisor for Technology Policy at FIRE, posted the following:
